Science Talk: Man and music.

11.01.2024, 18:30 in the Science Theatre

The meaning of music for people is complex and can vary from person to person. However, music often plays a significant role in human life and has various effects on emotions, culture, social interaction and personal experiences. We are therefore pleased to announce the upcoming event "science talk", in cooperation with Volkswagen, with the current topic "People and music". Please take note of our event notice and come along.

"science talk" on 11 January 2024 with the Director of the Institute of Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, Prof. Dr. med. mus. Eckart Altenmüller

People and music - why we can't live without it

Music generates powerful emotions and deepens and organises social bonds. Singing and making music combine magical elements, ancient collective experiences and highly lively qualities full of new sounds. It can influence moods, provide comfort, reduce stress and reinforce positive emotions. Music also contributes to cognitive development, especially in children. Even infants begin to "sing", explore and mould their voice and acquire control over their breathing.

As a musician, neurologist and scientist, Prof Dr Altenmüller is predestined to approach the importance of music from different perspectives as part of the science talk. He will introduce the audience to music psychological and neurobiological findings on emotions when listening to music and making music and establish a link to the history of human development.
