Meet the Scientist.

Prof Dr Ing Gerke and Jan Backhaus, M. Sc.

Drone-based optical infrastructure inspection.

Continuously monitoring the condition of critical infrastructure structures is a mammoth task. Modern technical methods aim to move from traditional inspection and reaction to "predictive monitoring", in which damage developments are continuously recorded and predicted.

The Institutes of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP) and Flight Guidance (IFF) at TU Braunschweig are working closely together to develop systems that can reliably and automatically collect the necessary condition data. They rely on high-resolution and overlapping photographs of the surface of the structures and automatically extract information about the existing damage. Drones are a suitable tool for reliably obtaining the required perspectives.

The speakers.

Prof Dr Markus Gerke.

Prof Dr Markus Gerke is Head of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP) at the Technical University of Braunschweig. His institute specialises in the fields of engineering geodesy, geoinformation, remote sensing and photogrammetry. For the research area presented here, it develops, among other things, automatic methods for damage detection from aerial images.

Jan Backhaus.

Jan Backhaus, M.Sc. is a research assistant at the Institute of Flight Guidance (IFF) at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He specialises in mission planning for the automated use of drones.

Guests at phaeno will have the opportunity to view such a drone, images and results. Two representatives of the institutes will report on their research projects "portAI" (BMDV) and "BridgeInspekt" (DFG), in which they are developing these methods for use on bridges and harbour structures, and will be happy to answer visitors' questions. They will also provide information about opportunities to study engineering at TU Braunschweig.

What is Meet the Scientist?

The Meet the Scientist format offers a look behind the scenes of science. Get to know researchers personally, ask them your questions and find out more about the background, challenges and goals of their work. Meet the Scientist at phaeno, find out more about the research project, ask questions about everyday working life, in the lab and at your desk. Experience science up close.

Come along, the offer is included in the admission price.
